Chinese EVs in Canada – Buyer beware!

Admittedly, the title is a bit clickbait-y.

The Government of Canada has announced that Chinese EVs will be allowed into the Canadian market, which is fantastic news for affordability and consumer choice.

Since then, there has been A LOT of speculation circulating online, some even bordering on scams. There have even been a few posts on social media that purport to show Canadian pricing for BYD EVs.

It’s important to know that as of April 2026, no Chinese manufacturers are currently selling or accepting pre-orders in Canada.

Here is what we still don’t know:

• Which manufacturers may actually come to Canada
• When they will be available
• If dealerships, or direct sales will be set up
• Pricing

For the next few years, it’s best to be cautious when reading any news related to new entrants to our EV market. Rely upon official announcements from manufacturers, or governments to be sure.
