If you’re like me, you take great pride in driving a zero-emission vehicle, and become quite irritated when you see an ICE vehicle belching smoke on the road. White, black, grey, or blue tailpipe smoke often indicates an issue with the engine and/or emissions system in a gas or diesel vehicle.
In Ontario, it is possible to report these vehicles to the Government’s Emissions Test Contact Centre.
When you see an offending vehicle, get a passenger to take a pic of the license plate, pull an image from your dash cam, or another means to safely note this information. Also note the current time, nearby intersection, and colour of the smoke for the report.
Navigate to the Emissions Test Contact Centre complaint form and submit as much information as you can.
In my experience, you will likely receive a response from their team within a business day or two. Unfortunately, they do not follow up on the resolution of the complaint, but logging this information can only help the greater good.
